Real Estate Financing...

Off of my chest and into my words....

Ok, I battled myself some of this evening on whether to write this at all.  Obviously, I won and I am:-)  My other battle, assuming I won the battle and wrote this which I did, was whether or not to make it public or private for viewing by those here in cyberland.  I decided to make this so anybody can see it if they come across it and choose to read it, for whatever it may be worth to anybody at all.  I left work at about 7:30 P.M. tonight for my humble abode.  It was a good day, a great day!  Full of energy and vigor, another day in Real Estate Paradise....which on a busy day entails most every emotion (good and bad) known to humanity as I know it.

And then I got an email, two emails actually, from two separate individuals on what I write here on the Active-Rain forum, on my little old blog.  The one email basically said that what I write is nice to read, but it's too off topic and I'm not representing the mortgage professionals the best I can.  It said that I "should write more about product and ongoing news within the mortgage industry" and "less about what I feel like writing."  The second email came to my eyes about 10 minutes later and in summary, using their words, said that..."Jason, you are despicable and should stop writing until you get that Real Estate Professionals want to know that mortgage people know what they are talking about, you do not.  Instead, you wax like your Shakespeare."

OK, some will say any publicity or attention or exposure is good.  I won't totally disagree.  I am not making this members only because I think this needs to be addressed.  After-all, why are us Real Estate Professionals Blogging....for the consumer or for ourselves?  I will tell those of you who are Real Estate Professionals and those of you who are not the same thing....I write for both!  I write like I want to live, for me and to contribute to the world the best I can.  That's that, in a nutshell.  There seems to be a dead horse out there I'm beating, we are beating, on why we are writing.  Why should I explain, but I am.  So, as long as I'm explaining, I will retort to each email...individually.

Number 1, I'm not going to name the names of the individuals who sent me these emails.  For whatever reason, they did.  Fine, they have every right.  And I have every right not to give them specific, but anonymous, attention.

So herein lies my feelings, beliefs, and thoughts....to the never mentioned names of the very mentioned emails.

Emailer Number One - I'm glad I'm a nice read, it's nice to add a bit of zest to somebody else's life in whatever facet I can.  As far as me writing more about product and news...I dare say read through the stuff I've written in its totality and I do believe there is a pretty fair balance.  I'll never though, write less about what I feel like writing, that is a total disservice to myself.  And when it is all said and done and I move to the high heavens for a greater cause, I don't want to ever be looking over a bony shoulder trying to figure out why I wasn't more of a ME.  I'll write any way I want amigo, and the public or professionals who may or may not read, may or may not feel like doing business with a guy like me.  That is my choice and theirs.  Get it?  Got it?  Good...................

Emailer Number Two- Oh, you I love.  You almost made me react to that out of emotion rather than the way I should.  I am despicable?  That's a harsh adjective, I'd say.  Not sure I agree with you on that.  I'm a lot of things but despicable isn't one of them.  I don't know what I'm talking about?  Hmmm...tell you what, call or email me any day of the week on an.....Nah.....never-mind all that.  If I don't know what I'm talking about, I'll be the first to tell ya and the first to find out the answer to what I may not know.  As far as Shakespeare, "Doth protest too much, and I may have just done the same."  None the less, you've never done business with me and are a competitor in its natural terminology, I don't want or need your 2 cents on how or what to write about anything, including Real Estate.  Take care of yourself and your clients, I will do the same.  There's no need to concentrate on what I am doing, focus on what you are doing....or not doing for that matter.

If you, the reader, are still in tune and reading as it is typed....good for you and me, I didn't bore you to death.  In our culture, no matter what industry (politics, teachers, news anchors, construction workers, banks, brokers, social workers, lawyers, plumbers, the list could go on and on) we need to remember one thing.  That is, looking out for each-other....call it a lesson in humanity.  I don't mind criticism, if constructive.  I don't mind disagreeing, if passionate and relevant.  I don't mind any of that at all.  Yet, come on, let's be real.  Cause I know who each of you email individuals are...and you can be darn sure I question the motives of why you wrote me.

These people that tell other people what they should write, how they should write (key word for control issues being "should") seem to have a problem with people who are able to write about other than the "real estate/mortgage" topics and write about the individuals that we are.  I for one love this part of Active Rain....that we are able to socialize and network. Who wants to even work on the other side of someone who can only focus on others? (not to mention poke at people as if they are "better than")  I really do not appreciate people who are trying to run this network like "they own it" instead of utilizing it for their business, benefit and the wide range of things it was meant for.

Hurumph....am I done ranting about why this or why that about malcontents?  (Shakespearean as they were)

Jason, here is the best revenge.  Your post tonight caught my eye, I read it and was intrigued to investigate further.  I read your past 10 blogs and LOVED them.  I really like the way you write because you can tell that you write as you!  So, I just subscribed to your blog.  Take that mean judgemental emailers!!!

Jason, I say write on full speed ahead.  The nay sayers are of small mind and as such should be ignored completely.  I would offer that they are probably jealous of your ability to wax poetic and they have difficulty waxing their shoes.

Write on my friend!!!  Damn  the torpedoes.

I'm an off topic queen, so I'm addressing this.  Delete me if I go to far, this irritates me.

When I first started here, I wrote more "real" real estate stuff.  A more experienced member took the time to notice me, read my stuff and wrote to me.  He told me my off topic stuff was where it was at.  I'm competing against ... well NOW about 40,000 other people.  They're all writing their hearts out about our chosen fields.  But when I write about my kids or dogs or whatever nonsense that pops into my head, you know me.

If I talk about work, work, work, it will take ages for anyone to bond with me.  You read my stuff (well, and as we're friends you see stuff others don't) and you KNOW me.  If I were writing work stuff constantly, I doubt you would have come back to my blog.  You can get that anywhere here.  I know that what caught my attention about your writing was that you have a spark, you're edgy.  You are not DRY.  Mortgage stuff (forgive me) tends to be dry in my book.  (From my years in banking, I feel I have a right to say this.)  You are not boring, you are not dry, and I feel like I know you from what you write.  I subscribed to you ages ago because reading your stuff is an adventure.

THAT'S what you need to do.  You need to write whatever pops into your head or your heart, and if it's something you think we need to hear, then you need to post it.   People want to work with someone they know.  I would trust you with any of my clients.  In fact, get yourself licensed here and in a year or two I'll go to you to refinance.  It's a put up or shut up world, and there, I said it.

And YEAH!!!, Darrel!!  (I liked that!)

Hey Jason,

You know what? I find it very amusing how someone has the nerve to email you with those type of comments yet..if they do not like what you write..then why did they continue reading it? It must have caught their eye with interest..or is it just jealousy? Do me one favor amigo...just write whatever you dam well please...if it makes you feel good to write your type of content then why does anyone else care? I did not realize that AR turned into a communist network. Freedom of speech as long as you abide by our guideline's. I keep saying this in all my comments to these types of posts..that I write what I want and when I want...it can be industry related,funny,rant,rave..localism,etc..even a funny video if I want...this goes out to your critics...IF YOU DON'T LIKE JASON'S OR ANYONE ELSE'S POSTS THEN STOP BITCHING , DON'T READ IT AND MOVE ON! there is plenty of different content and groups to fit every readers agenda. Send me the emails and I'll fly off the top ropes and splash them in person....wimps! Lets Rock!

Sis - Rant away....I held back, big time.  This forum has done numerous things for me, but the two I will outline right now are that of business and that of me.  I've learned a lot from a wide variety of people about Real Estate, on all sides of the equation....I will continue to do so.  It has also allowed me to keep a diary I've never kept.  This is a pretty darn good place for consumers and professionals alike and that is all I have to say about that.

Sis - By the way, thank you!

Beth - LOL, well I will take that as a compliment.  What an odd twist of irony?!!?

Thesa - Well put, I do have mixed feelings on it all.  Hate mail, in some regards, adds drama and while I hate drama....it has been proven that our culture loves to watch it play out.

Tracey - Maybe it isn't their fault, I'm starting to think they have bunny ears on their televisions:-)

Kaye - Wowsers!  Thanks.  Jimmy Morrison was right, People Are Strange.

Laurie - Thank you, but this time I will leave it be...

Darrel - Now that was funny!  Good call amigo!!

Sarah - Should I take your application now or later ;-)  You probably know my thoughts on all this and I'm not a huge fan of even having to write about such subjects as this...but they did get a reaction from me.  I'm not big into Southpark, but Cartman said it best, "Whatever, I do What I want."  I don't think I should rate that clip since Maury Povich is on at this time anyways....call me "Shakespearean" now.  LOL.

Neal - I do think we'd make one heck of a tag team.  "The Real Deal" & "The One & Only".   Darrel could be our manager and get somebody to wax our shoes while we are cutting promos:-)

Bill - You are right, in a sense.  Like I said, mixed feelings about even writing this....but so be it.  I did.

Bryant - TLW making breakfast?

How do these folks have the gall (substitute a letter) to do something like this... This is a blog in which is a reflection of your personality and your intelligence (my case lack of).  This is not Wall Street Journal..which puts me to sleep.  This is not Wikipedia which is driven by global contribution and factual (for the most part) informationThis is not some place that you are forced to read something... there are 1000s of other Mortgage specialist, professionals out there...I would suggest you subscribe to their dry doldrum industry based copied and pasted spin on thingsand take this writer off of your blog roll.  He would not be in the top 100 most subscribed blogs (out of 39,239) for nothing...where do you rank?

If they don't like what you have to write in your blog then they shouldn't pull it up and read it.  I'm sure there are a lot of people who enjoy reading your blog entries even if they don't pertain to mortgages (I don't know if they do or not I haven't read them just going off of what that real estate agent said).

I myself write more about news and mortgage figures, but I'm not that creative of a writer and that's just me.  Keep writing whatever you want and forget about that guy.

Jason...

If you have not already done so, please make sure you send those emails on to Caleb. I myself have received hate mail and the result of that is what is now known as the AR Guidelines. The guidelines were put in place for this very reason. Since the very beginning of AR we have had problems with certain individuals taking it upon themselves to try and control what and how we write. And just so you know I am pretty sure I know who sent you email number one.

OK my son, I'm back. Sorry had to run out and take a listing:) Some one found my company on the Internet! Jason one of the pitfalls of being "successful" is we have to deal with all the folks that want to bring us down. Well, I know in my case and I'm sure in yours "It ain't ever going to happen". The only thing they will ever take from me is my dust out of their eyes:)

Blog stands for Web Log. It is a diary. It's a diary of our everyday experiences. It is an opportunity for others to see who we are and how we conduct ourselves. It is NOT a place for static info. Folks, just don't get it. The consumer wants to be educated AND entertained. The key is to be able to do both. And you do it very well. "Off with their heads, I say!!!!!" Is that Shakespeare?

Blog and let blog.

Posted by Bryant Tutas-Tutas Towne Realty, Inc over 2 years ago

Bob - I would love to sit here and talk about how 'ranking' doesn't matter, but there is a reason for it.  I haven't given Caleb a snap because he wouldn't have me:-)  Seriously though, my mortgage experience of over 6 years pales in comparison to some....but tenure has never been my take.  I don't do biz with a guy or gal because they have been doing it for a long time, I do biz with them because they do right by me.  I treat busines accordingly.  I echo your "Grrrrrrrrrr..."

Christopher - Forgotten, at least I hope!  I'm glad you commented though Christopher and I may be able to learn from you.  I'm selfish in the aspect of I want to learn and grow...I'm checking your blog now to see if I can.

Posted by Jason Sardi, Mortgage Banker (FHA-VA-USDA-Conventional-Pennsylvania Loans) over 2 years ago

TLW - That's the thing, I'm not going to report this to anybody.  I'm not.  I'm not for a lot of reasons...and I think, I really do think, that I would rather knock their socks offs rather than indulge in their fantasy of me fancying what I'm not and displaying who they are.

Broker Bryant - A listing is good....nice work.  That is what we do for a living!  Well, I close loans and you do your thing but I hope you know what I'm striving at here...

"The only thing they will ever take from me is my dust out of their eyes:)"  Well put.  But they will be darn lucky if they collect even that from my eyes.   You are the King, and Kings tend to have scars...a lot of them.  Not sure of yours but I will say this, "When I die, whether it be sooner than later or vice versa, I will take to my mortality, my last fleeting whim.   I will be missed, especially by me."

Hi Jason... just my 2 cents worth of feedback. As you said "I write like I want to live, for me and to contribute to the world the best I can."...

In a community of 39,000+ people (July21/07), there are bound to be a few personality clashes. You have a style of your own and judging by the feedback and interaction you get to your posts, your writing obviously does connect with a lot of people.

We can't please everyone and shouldn't even try so as TLW suggested, forward the emails to the AR gods or just ignore them. Jealousy in never pretty, no matter what form it takes. have a great weekend...

Jason...

I may be spinning my wheels here but I will ask you to reconsider your decision not to report this. The reason I am asking is on behalf of other members. When this stuff goes without ramifications it has the tendency to cause even bigger problems. The people that wrote these emails are violating the guidelines that we worked so hard to put in place and to adhere to.

At least sleep on your decision for me. One more thing to consider is what if this email was sent to your sister Sarah? Do you see my point here? If we don't stand up and put a stop to the type of conduct displayed here it will continue and sooner or later someone is going to either be hurt or leave AR.

If you do not report them Jason...you are enabling them to keep doing it most likely to others. I am a firm believer of that. i will not contribute to other people and their nonsense and the same for you. Why should you carry this on your shoulders for the guideline breakers.  Save the rest of the members from the heartache.

And as a few have stated, they must like what you read or that you have caught their interest, because they keep reading your stuff.

Overall.....  I especially think number 2 was way out of line. And as someone mentioned, this is usually a form of jealousy because you have a good following. People that are usually jealous are those that leash out at people. I have found this out on here also.  Just keep blogging.....

Jason, continue being "you" that is what everyone likes about you.

Jason, wish I could write half as well as you. This is your blog you get to choose what you write, we get to choose if we want to read it and respond to it or not. To respond in the negative is always hard to figure out. Angry people, petty people, who knowsw where there coming from but as a network grows so does the number of malcontents who have nothing better to do then complain and cause trouble. Hard to believe someone like that can be in a "people" oriented business like this.

Ok, to all of you....thanks.  Thank you for everything!  I'd like to make three points if I may....

Number #1 - I'm not going to be crying to the Active-Rain Gods, but if a similiar email is sent to some of the people I know on here, watch out!  This forum is about educating the consumers about Real Estate and who we are.  If anybody attacks those I know like what happened/what was written to me, a retort in words would be a lucky moment for you.  Don't do it.....I'm begging now.....NEVER DO IT!

Number # 2 -  I don't get angry...I get even.  Ok, that's not totally true.  The fact is we have a lot to overcome and digest in this life...we have only so much time.  It pisses me off that people don't recognize we all have lives to live, air to breath, and have to wake up in the morning.  My point on #2 is never, ever, go at someone who isn't me.  You want to attack, I'm here....give it a shot.  But I beg you again not to do it to anybody else.

Jason, I recently subscribed to your blog because I enjoy how you write.  Your writing style is honest and transparent.  Qualities that I value highly in mortgage professionals I do business with.
Posted by Lola Audu~Audu Real Estate~Grand Rapids, MI Real Estate over 2 years ago

Jason,  The first email doesn't sound very bad at all.  It sounds like someone trying to give you some advice.  I would just thank them very much for their concern and not worry about it.

The second one sounds like a jerk.  I can't see how someone can be despicable because they don't write just about mortgages. Ask them about what kind of results they are getting with their style of writing.  If it's more than yours, then maybe you should take a look at what they are doing.

It sounds to me that it's a competitor who is getting jealeous with you becoming more popular at ActiveRain.  I wouldn't let this little hit get to you.  I hope all of these comments you received will counter balance those two emails.

When someone stands up taller than the crowd, they make a better target and someone else won't be able to make a nonsense potshot at them.

For writer number 2 to be able to spell "despicable" and then write something that says nothing seems like a practical joke.  I hope.

It is a 'yucca-ie' thing to do.

I have not read many of your blogs, but the ones I have I have enjoyed reading.

I find it interesting, yes even intriguing to see that someone read your blogs, and then emailed you telling you you shouldn't write like you do.  My response would have been a bit different than yours, probably along the lines of"

  •  "Thanks for your input, but readers in my target audience are professionals, not people like you.  If I ever decide to write for self-important critics, I will call you for advice."

Of course, I probably would have toned it down several notches before actually responding, but you get the idea.

If they are taking the time to read your articles, then your writing style need not be altered.  I wonder why they emailed you instead of commenting on your blogs?

Whew....I didn't expect all this...but here it goes;

Sis - Of course I joined:-)

David & Kristin - I appreciate that.  I never much cared for high school myself...

Mr. Brian Brady - Agreed.  Your conciseness is perfect.

Lola - Thank you for that.  Personally, I enjoy reading people that put THEMSELVES out there, it's nice to see the humanity we all have in common.

Tim - The first email wasn't that bad.  You're right there.  The second was ridiculous.  In either case, I don't mind people trying to educate me, God knows I can always evolve.  I do mind individuals spewing lectures.  By the way, I love your particular posts.

JudyAnn - I'm still trying to figure out the 'yucca-ie' thing:-)

Desiree - I love your name, you know why?  It is Desire with an added 'e'.  And from what you write, you personify that.

Fran - That's a heck of a retort in of itself.

Sue - I will continue to strive for EXCELLENCE....it will be a long haul:-)

Katrina - Love the graphic!

Mary - Oh, you can bet I'll keep on blogging on...

Bob & Carolin - To some extent, in my mind, you're dead on.

Melody - I suppose you are right.

Rich - I'm not sure....actually I'm quite sure why they didn't comment on my blogs.  It's easy to be dissenting without being accountable, at least by somebody 'more important' than me.  Blog more Rich, you are a proficient writer and a treat to read.

Goodness, "Instead, you wax like your Shakespeare."  Is that the best your critics can do?

The king's a beggar, now the play is done:
All is well ended, if this suit be won,
That you express content; which we will pay,
With strife to please you, day exceeding day:
Ours be your patience then, and yours our parts;
Your gentle hands lend us, and take our hearts.

You take our hearts.

If one must be criticized, being compared to Shakespear is not a sharp stick in the eye, is it??

I'm jealous- I haven't gotten hate mail.  If I had, however, I wouldn't take your reasonable approach- rather, I'd happily post it for all to see, so that the ensuing comments would send a clear message to the author that what they've deemed "appropriate content" is subjective- who appointed them the messenger of what a blog is?  Send them my way...I need some entertainment to take the place of wedding stress! :)
Posted by Options Realty over 2 years ago

Jason -  Great post. Relevant topic. After all, the reason blogs are powerful is because they take an impersonal format (the web) and make it more personal (by permitting you to add your own personality). Staying "on topic" will improve your SEO but not your personal appeal. A good mix between professional and personal makes the biggest impact, IMHO.

Tell the nay-sayers that it should be "wax like you're Shakespeare" -- not "wax like your Shakespeare" -- so maybe they should wax like someone who can write? (Just my 2 cents). And yes, I make typos too, but I think a person would be wise to double check all the details were sending slam-o-grams, right?

And Bryant... Off with their heads is Lewis Carroll (think of the Queen of Hearts in the Garden) not Shakespeare... but you know what? (*furrowing forehead in deep thought*) Perhaps the character of the queen would be a good judge of this situation. She wanted to lop off heads. Your naysayers aren't using theirs. Win-win situation, eh?

Great post Jason- just remember- "I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not"

You'll find some folks around that are being "who they are not" and it shines through.   Here on ActiveRain there seems at times to be a lack of objectivity- which is true anytime you put together a group of humans.  It happens on web forums, church groups, workplaces.... everywhere.  I don't think that it exists is an issue as much as a persons ability to deal with it.  I like your approach and appreciate an objective response like yours.  I don't believe its ever been officially attributed to anybody, but most believe Voltaire first said "'I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it'

Jason - I just wrote a blog about the same type of thing.  I was recently told that I was unprofessional in one attack, (to which I responded that I could sell CIRCLES around this anonymous agent), and also to stay on topic, because no one wants to hear about my weight loss.  In fact, they told me to move my blog to a banana website, because that was about all my blog was good for.

I am very tired of this too.  Not only is it sad that people can't be supportive, but also that they have the time to sit and comment derogitorially (is that a word????) on other's writing.  Jealousy?  Perhaps.  All I know is I can barely keep up with my own blog lately.  I'm getting tons of leads, I'm writing PA's and crazy busy.  Perhaps if they got their negative butt off our blogs, attempted a little bit of marketing, and had an aura of ANYTHING positive about them, they would be busy too.

I completely agree with a comment I read above stating that mortgage information is dry.  I have local mortgage professionals that I use, and who I get information from.  The last thing AR (and any real estate agent) needs is thousands of mortgage professionals writing the same damn thing every day (can I say damn?) when we already know that information!

Perhaps if you negative people want to know more about mortgages, you should schedule an appearance at a continuing education class in your state that discusses such topics.  Or just try a Google search.  I know I wrote a blog about the different types of mortgages, and I'm not even a mortgage professional!  Read my blog, but keep your negativity to yourself.

Also you may want to consider using a dictionary sometime.  In fact, while you're sitting in front of that computer, trying to find someone to harass, try visiting www.dictionary.com and looking up "blog".  This is what you will find:

Webster's New Millennium™ Dictionary of English

Main Entry:  blog
Part of Speech:  n
Definition:  an online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page; also called Weblog, Web log
Example:  Typically updated daily, blogs often reflect the personality of the author.
Etymology:  shortened form of Weblog
Usage:  blog, blogged, blogging v, blogger n

If I'm wrong, let me know, but I'm pretty sure that Jason is writing a BLOG, which is (according to what I just posted) a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a web page.  It also often reflects the personality of the author.

Perhaps you should attempt having a personality.  You can move forward from there.

Jason, you have tons of personality, and I love your blog and your writing.  DO NOT let these losers harass you.  Delete, and move on.  Keep writing what you want to write, and I'll do the same.

Jason, I know a fair bit about Narcissistic Personality Disorder (after studying it indepth for 8 months in order to UNDERSTAND why some people act in such extremely nasty ways) and have found out mainly three things.

Number one~ Narcissists do not like themselves (although they appear externally to LOVE themselves) and are very insecure.

Number two~Narcissists love to project their own shortcomings onto the people they are envious of.

Number three~ Narcissists have no empathy and often no conscience.

The emailers definitely fall under Numbers two and three on my list. Hmmm.

There is nothing that can be done about people with NPD other than to go NC (no contact) with them due to the fact that they see even a negative feedback from you, as a positive thing.  Don't feed the vampires !!

The saddest thing is that NPD is an incurable mental disorder (usually brought about through a genetic predisposition and childhood abuse).

In my opinion, the best bloggers come from the heart and express their own interests as well.  I've read other blogs saying that we shouldn't get too personal and should stick to "business".  I understand but disagree.  Isn't blogging supposed to be about people getting to know you and then trusting you as a business associate?  Keep writing.  From your posts I can tell that YOU are coming back into the business... watch out world!

I missed this the first time.  Quite an interesting thread.  I hope they never returned!

Tammy - Ahhhhh, mucho grazie!  And you are darn right!!!

Ginger - Oddly enough, they didn't.  A war of words is one thing I'm pretty good at:-)
