Blog is in the eye of the beholder?

Ok.  I got to get something off my chest, besides the chia-pet looking growth the good lord blessed me with.  It deals with the featured blogs here on ActiveRain.  What separates the featured from the not?  I'm not quite sure.  Somebody help me here!

I will try to make this parsimonious.  I read through ActiveRain blogs daily, featured and otherwise.  Some of those featured are deservingly so in my mind's eye.  They are well written, timely, informative, creative, and have the intangible dynamic that creates an elevated enlightenment of some sorts when read.  Other featured blogs I've seen are more 'blah' than K-Fed's latest rap album.

Quick Example:  "This morning before work I was shaving my legs and it reminded me of the mortgage industry and how smooth every transaction should be. Clients enjoy a smooth transaction and that's what I aim to give them on each loan they do with me."  Bam, 200 point blog.  And if enough people comment, it's featured.  Ok, that may be an over the top example but I've seen stuff like that.

The features get more exposure.  Exposure is good:-)  The ones that aren't, while perhaps harder to find, are seemingly diamonds in the rough.  If they are good that is.  What separates the two?  Maybe it's arbitrary.  Perhaps it's popularity.  Could even be a conspiracy.  WHEEEEEWWWWWWWWWW.  Who knows?  Whatever the case, I enjoy them in total.  The real estate industry, the internet community, & blog addicts are better off with its existence.  That I do know.

This is a very good question.  How do we get a featured blog?  Still working on learning how to move around.

   Wow, you shave your legs?

If you read around some of the Active Rain blogs from Matt and Caleb, you will see their criteria for featured blogs.

They readily admit that there are a lot of blogs that do not get featured simply because of space.

Some blogs will not get featured at first, but after they generate a lot of comments, they will get featured because it appears that they may be something that people are interested in.

This blog will probably get a lot of comments and maybe later be featured simply because points, features, dashboards, addiction are all HOT Topics on Active Rain.

A little picture on the blog would have helped. Happy blogging.

By the sound of this blog, maybe it's the chest that he should be shaving.

And Jason, I agree with Karen, a picture would be nice.

A picture would be nice.

A picture of an eye?   Maureen Francis used one in Dang Nobody Saw It.   Or a  picture of a leg... preferabley a lovely shaved leg?

Recently Maureen Francis wrote an entry about dressing up your blog with pictures.  Staging your blog, that gave sources of free images.  She's had 42 featured entries... she knows what she is doing.

Jason, I couldn't agree more.  I am a big proponent of providing quality content.  Were some of the blogs I see here on AR actually out in the WWW, they would die because the content isn't informative enough for the discriminating consumer. So, well said, J!

Jason, you've had 3 featured posts out of 37. That's not too shappy, compared to the rest of the masses. I simply look at what the dashboard leaders are doing - how do they maintain their positions? Certainly many have a following, but most of them post really good blogs, content-wise and visual-wise. What is your passion and forte professional and personally? Blog about it, convey a sense of your personality in your posts. Find your audience. Good eye-catching Headings work as well. But the most thing is good, valuable content.
